The Scariest Monster Is the One You Don't See Coming
All month, we've been talking about the money monsters that come from outside of us. Ghost clients. Zombie projects. Energy vampires. Trolls. But there's one more monster I haven't mentioned yet, and it's the sneakiest one of all, because it doesn't come from anyone else. It comes from you.
It's called fear of success.
I know, it sounds strange. Why would we be scared of the thing we're working so hard for? But in Money Bootcamp, we call these Negative Consequences: the things we secretly believe will go wrong if we actually get what we want, and they quietly hold us back without us even realizing it.
When I first started my business, one of my biggest fears was that I'd get too successful. So busy that when Oprah finally called, I'd have to say, "Sorry, I'm booked solid." It sounds silly now, but fears like that are incredibly common. Maybe for you it's the fear of having less time with your family. Or that friends might treat you differently. Or that more money means more responsibility, attention or judgment.
Whatever it is, it's real, and it can sabotage your goals just as effectively as any client ever could.
I see this show up most clearly with one particular money archetype: the Accumulator. Accumulators are generally responsible and good with money, but they crave certainty, and the lack of it around a new investment or decision can send them straight into analysis paralysis. I'll watch people discover Money Bootcamp, make a spreadsheet, write a pros and cons list, wait for a discount that's never coming... and then join two years later, once the fear has finally quieted down enough to let them take action.
If that sounds familiar, here's the pattern I want you to watch for: waiting for the perfect conditions, the best price, or the moment you "feel ready" often means the opportunity, and the growth that would have come with it, passes you by instead.
So how do you actually work through it? I use a simple three-step process I call OCP:
ORIGIN STORY: Where did this fear come from? Often it's an old family saying: "money doesn't grow on trees," "there's no such thing as a free lunch," or simply, "we can't afford it." If you grew up watching people work hard for every dollar, it can feel wrong, even dangerous, for money or success to come easily.
CONNECT TO SABOTAGE: Where does that old story show up in your business today? Maybe you resist passive income because it doesn't feel like "real" work. Maybe you keep choosing clients who are a pain in the butt, because some part of you feels like you have to earn it the hard way. Maybe there's a broken payment link on your website that's been sitting there for months.
PATTERN INTERRUPT: This is how you break the cycle. Watching other people succeed is one of the best pattern interrupts there is, it retrains your brain to believe "if they can do it, so can I." Another simple one is to ask yourself, "why not me?" Someone out there is looking for a person who looks like them, sounds like them, or comes from where they come from, doing the very thing you're scared to do.
Here's the truth that took me years to accept: the goal was never the absence of fear. I met a self-made millionaire once and asked her if she ever stopped being scared. She said no. What scares you today won't scare you tomorrow, but there will always be a next level, and a new edge of fear to move through to get there.
So if you're sitting on an opportunity right now, an investment, a price increase, a launch, and some old, quiet voice keeps whispering that it's not safe, that's not a sign to wait for the fear to disappear. It's a sign to ask yourself: is this actually preventing me from moving forward, or am I just waiting to feel ready?
Sometimes you have to make the leap before the certainty arrives, not after.
