Meet the Scary Money Monsters Hiding in Your Business
It's Halloween season, and that means it's time to talk about something truly spooky. No, not ghosts and ghouls, I'm talking about scary clients, creepy money conversations, and the energy vampires who suck the joy and profit right out of your business.
Don't worry, this isn't a horror story. In business, you will meet your share of ghosts, zombies, vampires and probably a werewolf or two. I've had all of them over the years. But you don't have to let them haunt you forever, or ruin your business.
Let's meet the cast of characters, and what to do about each one.
THE GHOST CLIENT
You know the type. You have a great conversation, you send a proposal or an invoice, and then... silence. Crickets. They vanish into thin air.
The old me used to take this so personally. What did I do wrong? Maybe I should lower my prices? But the truth is, when somebody ghosts you, it's usually not about you. Sometimes their own money blocks come up, or they simply weren't ready.
What to do: send one polite follow-up ("Hey, just checking in to see if you're still interested, no pressure either way"), and then let it go. The fortune is in the follow-up, but chasing a ghost forever will only exhaust you. If they're truly meant to work with you, they'll come back when they're ready.
THE ZOMBIE PROJECT
Maybe you finish work with somebody, but they keep rising back from the dead. One more tweak. One more quick conversation. Just a small favor. Sound familiar?
I had a client who still emailed me two years after our contract ended. And when I didn't respond right away, she'd text me too. I kept replying for a while, because I didn't want to seem rude. But when you say yes to zombie requests every time, you teach people your boundaries aren't real.
What to do: clear contracts and communication are the cure. You need written terms about when a project starts and ends, and what's included. You can say something like, "I'd love to help, that would fall under a new project, here's the link to book it." You're not being mean, you're modeling what healthy business boundaries look like.
THE VAMPIRE DISCOUNT (AND ENERGY VAMPIRES)
And now for the scariest ones. You can feel it: they drain you during every call. They push for discounts. They send long emotional messages at 11pm. These clients feed off your guilt, your empathy and your desire to be liked, and if you're a natural people-pleaser, they will test your boundaries every single time.
What to do: have clear policies, and stick to them. Your business hours, your communication methods, your refund policy, all of it. You don't have to respond straight away, especially if you're tired or triggered. You don't owe anyone a long explanation. "That's my policy" is a complete sentence. And if someone constantly drains you, it's okay to let them go.
THE POLTERGEIST REFUND REQUEST
This one pops up out of nowhere, often long after your refund window has closed, rattling its chains and demanding your money back. It's startling, but it's easy to handle once you have a policy and stick to it. "Our policy is X days, and this request falls outside that window" is a complete, kind, firm answer.
THE JEKYLL & HYDE CLIENT
Your biggest fan one minute, howling at your door the next. Often over-the-top complimentary at the start (it can be tempting to believe it!), then they flip the moment you set even a small boundary. This is exactly where strong contracts and clear scope save you from a much bigger headache later.
HERE'S THE TWIST
Sometimes the scariest monster isn't out there, it's the fear inside us. Fear of saying no. Fear of charging what we're worth. Fear of being judged for our success. When you heal those fears, you naturally start attracting calmer, more respectful clients, people who value your time because your energy sets the tone.
So to recap: don't chase ghosts, follow up once or twice and then let go. Use contracts and clarity with zombie projects. And set boundaries, kindly and firmly, with energy vampires. You can be compassionate and still have a business that feels peaceful, not one that haunts you at 3am.
