How to Simplify Your Finances (Without a Complicated System)

I'm going to let you in on something: I am not a naturally organized person.

I've said this on the podcast before and people are always a little shocked. I don't use a fancy diary, I don't have fifteen different finance apps, and I'm not big on complicated systems.

And yet my finances feel calm and simple. So how does that work?

The answer is that simplifying your finances has very little to do with complexity, and everything to do with consistency.

Start With One Question

Before you build any kind of system, ask yourself this: what does "simple" actually mean for me?

For some people, simple means one account for everything. For others, it means separate accounts for different purposes — bills, savings, fun money. There's no universally "right" system. The right system is the one you'll actually use.

So don't copy someone else's complicated spreadsheet just because it looks impressive. If it's not something you'll maintain, it's not simple. It's just another thing to avoid.

Three Things That Actually Simplify Money

Automate what you can. Bills, savings, transfers — anything that doesn't require a decision every time should be automatic. The fewer decisions you have to make about money day to day, the calmer it feels.

Have one regular check-in. Create time for a "Money Monday." Once a week, ten to fifteen minutes, you check your accounts, see what's come in and gone out, and handle anything that needs attention. That's it. You don't need to check your money five times a day — that just creates anxiety. One calm, consistent check-in is plenty.

Clear the clutter regularly. Unused subscriptions, unpaid invoices, unfollowed-up debts — these things create complexity even when you're not thinking about them. A regular clear-out (even just once a season) keeps things simple.

What Simple Is Not

Simple doesn't mean avoiding your numbers. That's not simple, that's just vague, and vague always creates more stress in the long run, not less.

Simple also doesn't mean cheap or basic. You can have a beautifully simple system and still build real wealth. In fact, the simpler your system, the more likely you are to actually stick with it long enough to see real results.

A Free Starting Point

If you want a guided way to simplify your money this month, I've put together a free workbook — Virgo's Guide to Getting Organized with Your Money and Your Mindset. Simple doesn't mean less powerful. It just means sustainable. And sustainable is what actually changes your financial life over time.

It's your time, and you're ready for the next step.
