How to Get More Organized With Your Money (Even If You've Never Been "A Numbers Person")
"I've just never been a numbers person."
I hear some version of this all the time, usually said with a little bit of resignation, like it's a permanent personality trait rather than a learnable skill.
Here's what I want you to know: being organized with money isn't about being naturally gifted with numbers. It's about a handful of small habits, repeated consistently. That's genuinely it. No special gift required.
Start Small — Really Small
The biggest mistake I see people make when they decide to "get organized" is trying to overhaul everything at once. New spreadsheet, new budget, new app, new system, all in the same week. It's exhausting, and most people abandon it within a few days.
Instead, pick one thing. Just one.
Maybe it's tracking what comes in for a week, without judging it or trying to change anything yet. Maybe it's clearing out your wallet. Maybe it's finally automating one bill that's been on autopilot to be forgotten instead.
One small action, done consistently, beats a complicated system you abandon after four days.
The Three-Step Approach I Use
When I'm helping someone get organized with their money, I usually suggest this order, because it builds momentum naturally.
Clear first. Before you build anything new, clear out what's cluttering things up. Old bills, forgotten subscriptions, unclaimed refunds, unpaid invoices you're owed. This creates both physical and mental space.
Build simple systems second. A weekly money check-in. Automated payments. A small, consistent savings habit — even five dollars a week counts, because it's building the identity of someone who saves, not just the amount.
Get honest about the numbers third. Once the clutter is cleared and a basic system is in place, looking at your actual income, expenses, and pricing feels far less overwhelming. You're not starting from chaos anymore.
Why Most People Get Stuck
Most people get stuck at step three because they skip steps one and two. They try to look honestly at their numbers while everything around those numbers is still chaotic. No wonder it feels overwhelming.
Do the clearing and the systems first. The numbers get so much easier after that.
A Free Guide to Help
I've put together exactly this process in a free workbook this month — Virgo's Guide to Getting Organized with Your Money and Your Mindset. It takes you through clearing, systems, and your numbers in that order, with simple fill-in trackers and prompts along the way.

You don't need to become a numbers person. You just need a few small habits and a bit of patience with yourself.
It's your time, and you're ready for the next step.
