Money Leaks and How to Plug Them
A money leak is exactly what it sounds like — a small, often unnoticed place where money is draining out of your life or business. Individually, they rarely feel like a big deal. Added up over a year, they can be enormous.
The tricky thing about money leaks is that they're designed to be ignored. They're small enough that noticing them feels like more effort than they're worth. That's exactly why they survive for so long.
But it's almost impossible to fill your money bucket until you plug these leaks.
This Virgo season is the perfect time to go looking for yours.
Common Personal Money Leaks
Subscriptions you forgot you had. The streaming service you don't use anymore. The app you signed up for once and never opened again. These add up to real money every single month.
Late fees. If you're regularly paying late fees on anything — credit cards, bills, memberships — that's a leak that's completely avoidable with one simple fix: automation.
Impulse spending that doesn't actually bring joy. Not all spending is a leak — plenty of spending is intentional and joyful, and that's wonderful. The leak is the spending you don't even remember doing, that didn't really add anything to your life.
Common Business Money Leaks
Underpricing. This is one of the biggest leaks I see, and it's rarely a single dramatic decision — it's death by a thousand small ones. A price that was set years ago and never revisited. A discount that became permanent. A service you've quietly expanded without adjusting the fee.
Unclaimed money. Invoices that were sent and never followed up on. Refunds you're owed but never chased. Affiliate payments or royalties you haven't checked in on. This isn't really spending — it's money that's already yours, sitting unclaimed.
Tools and software you're not using to capacity. Many businesses pay for tiers of software far beyond what they actually use, simply because nobody's reviewed it in a while.
How to Plug Them
Start with an audit, not a panic. Go through your bank and credit card statements from the last three months and highlight anything you don't recognize, don't use, or had forgotten about. No judgment.
Cancel or downgrade what you don't need. This alone often recovers more money than people expect.
Automate what's left. Once you've trimmed the leaks, set everything that remains to automatic, so new leaks are less likely to creep back in.
Review pricing at least once a year. Treat it like a recurring appointment, not a one-time decision you made years ago and forgot about.
I cover this exact process — alongside clearing clutter and getting clear about your numbers — in my free workbook, Virgo's Guide to Getting Organized with Your Money and Your Mindset.

Plugging your leaks won't make you rich overnight. But it does mean the money you're already making actually stays with you. That's not a small thing.
It's your time and you're ready for the next step.
