Why Do Bad Money Things Keep Happening to Me?
I hear this one a lot. "Denise, why does it feel like bad money things just keep happening to me?"
The car breaks down right after a big client payment comes in. The unexpected bill shows up the same week as a slow month. You finally save a bit and then something "urgent" eats it. It can feel almost personal, like the universe has it in for you specifically.
I don't think that's what's happening. But I do think there's a pattern worth looking at — and it's not really about how much money you make. It's about what happens the moment you have more than enough.
You Can Be Uncomfortable With Excess
Most of us have spent far more time being okay with "just enough" than we have being okay with abundance.
Think about it. If you've spent years (or your whole life) in a pattern of scarcity — just covering the bills, just making it work, just getting by — your nervous system becomes very, very good at managing that. It knows what to do with "just enough." It's had practice.
But excess? Genuine surplus? For a lot of us, that's unfamiliar territory. And anything unfamiliar can register as unsafe, even when consciously we want it more than anything.
So when more money shows up than you're used to having, instead of feeling calm and expansive, something in you might quietly tense up. And because you don't have a plan for what to do with it — how to save it, invest it, enjoy it, protect it — it tends to find its own way back out. A "convenient" expense. An impulsive purchase. A forgotten bill that suddenly needs paying. The money leaks away, almost on schedule, until you're back to the amount that feels familiar.
This isn't sabotage in some dramatic, self-destructive sense. It's your nervous system doing what it knows how to do, because nobody ever taught it what to do with more.
The Missing Piece: A Plan for Abundance
Here's what I've noticed. Most of us were taught, directly or indirectly, how to survive on not quite enough. Budget carefully. Don't waste anything. Make it stretch.
Almost nobody was taught what to actually do when there's more than enough. How to save meaningfully. How to invest it. How to spend on yourself without guilt. How to plan for a future that isn't just about scraping by.
So when the excess shows up, there's no map. And in the absence of a map, the money tends to just... go. Not because you're careless, but because there's no established habit pulling it anywhere useful.
This is why so many people can have a brilliant month financially and somehow still end up exactly where they started a few weeks later. It's not that the money wasn't real. It's that there was nowhere for it to land.
Where This Comes From
This pattern isn't random. It's built from your money memories — what you witnessed, absorbed, and were taught about money, usually well before you were old enough to question any of it.
Maybe your household ran on "just enough" for years, and that became your nervous system's idea of normal. Maybe excess was treated with suspicion in your family — the idea that having more than you needed was somehow risky, or that it wouldn't last, so why get used to it. Maybe nobody ever modeled what calm, intentional saving or investing actually looked like.
None of that goes away just because you started a business or had a big launch. It just goes underground, quietly running the show whenever more money than usual shows up.
The Good News
This pattern can shift. It's not permanent, and it's not a character flaw.
The first step is usually awareness — noticing what happens in your body and your decisions the moment you have more than enough. The next step is building an actual plan for excess, before it arrives. Where will extra money go? How much gets saved? How much gets invested? How much gets enjoyed, guilt-free? Deciding this in advance, while things are calm, makes a huge difference compared to deciding it in the moment, when old habits take over.
I've put together a free workbook this month that's a great starting point for exactly this — Virgo's Guide to Getting Organized with Your Money and Your Mindset. It won't single-handedly rewire your relationship with abundance, but it will help you build a few simple systems — including a savings habit, even if it starts small — so that when more money does show up, there's somewhere for it to go.

And if you're ready to go deeper — to actually understand where your pattern around excess came from and start shifting it for good — that's exactly the work we do inside Money Bootcamp.
It's your time, and you're ready for the next step.
