The Suitcase You Have Been Carrying (And How to Put It Down)

money blocks money mindset money shame receiving worthiness

There is a particular kind of financial weight that has nothing to do with your bank balance.

It is the weight of all the money decisions you have been replaying for years. The investment that went wrong. The client who never paid you. The business that did not work out. The times you trusted the wrong person. The purchases you are still quietly ashamed of.

You might not think about these things every day. But they are in there. And they are heavier than you realize.

How money shame travels with you

Money shame is sneaky because it rarely announces itself clearly. It does not say: I am still carrying guilt about that business failure from 2019.

Instead it shows up as:

  • A low-level anxiety when you look at your bank account
  • Resistance to sending invoices or following up on late payments
  • A feeling that you do not deserve to want more, given past mistakes
  • An inability to celebrate financial wins because you are waiting for something to go wrong
  • Holding yourself to a lower standard because on some level you feel you earned that

And here is what makes it worse: you are often carrying shame that does not even belong to you. Other people's money fears absorbed from your family growing up. A parent's anxiety about paying bills. A grandparent's experience of genuine scarcity. Generations of people who survived hard times and passed down the emotional weight of it.

You are carrying their suitcase too.

A visualization that actually helps

One of the most effective practices I use for releasing money shame is a suitcase visualization.

Close your eyes. Imagine a suitcase in front of you. And then, one by one, you pack into it every money regret, every shame, every resentment you are still holding.

The investment that went wrong. Pack it in. The client who never paid you. In it goes. The boss who undervalued you and paid you less than you deserved. The silly purchase you are still cringing about. The debt you took on for someone else who never even felt bad about it.

Notice how heavy the suitcase gets. Notice how much you have been carrying around.

And then make a choice. You can put it in the cupboard to look at another day. Or you can throw it off a cliff, send it away on a garbage truck, let it go completely.

You do not have to carry it anymore.

What releasing shame actually does for your money

This is not just a feel-good exercise. When you are dragging old shame into every financial decision, it clouds your judgment, keeps your energy contracted, and puts a ceiling on what you are willing to ask for.

Releasing it is not the same as ignoring what happened. You are allowed to learn from the past. You are not required to haul it with you everywhere you go.

When you put it down, something opens. A willingness to try again. A capacity to receive that was not available when the shame was taking up all the space.
